Old Courthouse Road, in Vienna Virginia, is about a 2.5 mile stretch of winding, shoulderless back road with sharp turns and blind bends complicated by political boundaries which are Town of Vienna and Fairfax County. Our community has seen a large turn over where many original owners in the 1960's are now moving and being replaced by younger families with children.
Because Town of Vienna was named #4 Best place to live in 2005 coupled with the proximity of Westbriar Elementary School, Old Courthouse Road attracts many young families. During the past 10 years, there were on average 43 new young families per year in a half mile radius.
We are families who live on Old Courthouse Road, Creek Crossing and surrounding streets and we are united, regardless of political boundaries, in our request to find innovative solutions to the ever increasing volume and speed of vehicles travelling our streets endangering our children, our families, our community. This request is for the entire stretch of the Old Courthouse Road from Gosnell Road to the intersection of Beulah Road, Beulah Road, and Trap Road and Creek Crossing. From August 2007 to August 2008, this community has seen 13 accidents, 296 speeding citations, close to 12,000 cars on a daily basis.
The construction of the Tyson's rail will not help the community on Old Courthouse Road. Regardless of whether the rail is above or below ground, it is in fact a "kiss and ride" which means that people will have to drive to get to the 4 stops.
Our Goals are:
• Increase the quality of life of residents of our community;
• Create a safe and attractive community for residents and for drivers passing through;
• Improve conditions for cyclists, pedestrians, children walking to school;
• Reinforce the historical and natural settings.
Our Objectives are:
• Slow traffic to within posted speed limits;
• Reduce accident frequency and intensity;
• Increase safer access to the roadway from neighborhoods;
• Provide safer access to Westbriar Elementary School for children;
• Enhance trails and crosswalks for cyclists, pedestrians;
• Enhance the historic resources and natural settings;
• Create a roadway that can accommodate existing volumes and some future growth.
